I haven't read 1984, but I have read Brave New World, and I enjoyed that. They have similiar concepts (utopia/distopia). So my suggestion is Brave New World.

I'm sorry, but the two "firefighter" poems I've read both left this stenching aftertaste of mediocrity. These poems cause little if any emotional affect; rather, they're trite praise of firefighters.

I don't like it. I think the parallel structure in the last stanza ruins everything you're trying to express. The ryhming doesn't do it for me either. The ideas are fine just re-work the structure...
