Default 1984!!!

Hopefully I am not the only one who enjoyed this book by George Orwell. The world that he creates is so contorted and sickening, that it is realistic. A world where your thoughts are the only crimes. A world of castes. A world where the government can hear everything you say, without a warrant (sound familiar).

The concept of double speak I found remarkably interesting. Can 2+2=4 and 2+2=5 at the same time?

I would suggest this book to everyone.

I read it almost three years ago, and remember it a bit vaguely...but I liked it a lot, and it scared me at the same time. And I'd read it just in time to get all the coming references to Big Brother.

I heard that book was kind of creepy. my mom and i like to read different books and then compare notes. she said that when she read it, and then the patriot act was created, it made her wonder...

The book is creepy. The government knowing this much about its citizens and the citizens knowing that little about their government = creepy.

That is odd about your mom's timing.

If you like 1984, I would suggest reading Anthem by Ann Rand. It is similar to 1984, but not the same.

I haven't read 1984, but I have read Brave New World, and I enjoyed that. They have similiar concepts (utopia/distopia). So my suggestion is Brave New World.

I found 1984 to be a book full of interesting concepts, but the writing left a lot to be desired. For me, Farenheit 451 was a much creepier book (and Ray Bradbury wrote it in 9 days!!!), purely because the world turned as it did through sheer laziness of the populace.

I think the best section of the book was in Emmanual Goldstein's Book. War is Peace was especially interesting.

I don't really like newspeak and double think. Whenever I try thinking in all positive words with un's and pluses, it sounds so odd.
