I don't know about 13 year olds, but my English teacher complains to my English class about how much he hates having sophomore girls in his creative writing class. His reasoning is that they always write about the same topics: breaking up with boyfriends, death, drugs, etc. It is perfectly normal to write about these topics in my opinion.
Good luck with your writing.
