Rescued by an Angel
I am on my way home from a dinner. It is 10:45 p.m. As I am traveling home, my pager goes off; Truck-31, Medic-20, Truck-87, Ladder-40, Battalion chief, respond to a structure fire, 395 E. 800 S. respond on a code-3. Call time 10:47 p.m. I turned around and headed back into the city. When I get to the Fire House, all of my fellow firefighters are gearing up. When I got my gear on and got on the truck, we headed out with lights and sirens wailing. As we are going down the road people were swerving out of our way. I think, “What if I loose my life?” “What will happen to my family?” But then I hear a voice tell me that everything will be o.k. just trust me. Upon arrival, I hopped off the truck and grabbed the hoses. I ran over to a nearby hydrant and while I was connecting the hose to the hydrant, I hear a child scream. I turned around and heard the scream coming from the burning home. I broke into a sprint towards the burning home. I ran inside, and heard the scream coming from upstairs. I ran up the stairs. I started to call out” Where are you!!!” When I got to the top of the stairs I found a little girl underneath a bed. I picked her up in my arms and carried her down the stairs. My exit was blocked by falling debris from the ceiling. It occurred to me that I may not make it out alive. But then I saw another Firefighter wearing white turnout gear. He told me to follow him, so I did. He led me to a living room window and pointed to it and said “Everything is going to be ok!” After I got out, I turned around and looked back to see the firefighter saluting me. Then he turned around and walked into the fire and disappeared.
The little girl was crying. She gave me a kiss and said “thank you.” After we got back to the station, I went in and sat down and broke down crying. A firefighter came up to me and asked, “What was wrong?” I told him about the angel. He told me that he has seen the angel also. After everyone left and went home, I went into the firefighters memorial hall, where all of the Firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty are remembered. As I was gazing at the pictures, I came across a firefighter who the angel who saved my life.
