What is your favorite character from a book?
My favorite character is Sherlock Homles. He is in-your-face, humorous at times, and of course smart enough to solve every mystery. My second favorite character is Snape from Harry Potter. I hate his guts, but he is fun to debate about (see HBP section). |

Hermione springs to mind. She reminds me of myself, only infinately cooler, since she's done things like punch Malfoy and lived through more than a few adventures.
I also love Artemis Fowl. Holly was cool, but Artemis had an edge to him, considering he was the good bad guy. I wish Jim Rockford was a character from a book and not a 70's tv show, because he knows how to talk his way out of situations, and is very real: he doesn't solve every case - sometimes the police are ahead of him - but he tries, and isn't completely gung-ho, but funny.

Ah, my favorite was always Lyra from Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series.
Oh come on Isis, who's cooler than you?

And just in general.
I feel like my commentary on Hermione made me look like a presumptuous pain in the rump. >_< Not intentional, I swear. Lyra is a great one, indeed. I wish I'd read the whole series at once instead of spreading it out over 4 years.

Nah, it didn't make you sound presumptuous.
Have you read any of the other series that he [Phillip Pullman] wrote? I always imagined the His Dark Materials series to be true, I bet my daemon would be something cuddly and cute, like a ferret!

None of the series. I tried to read the Ruby in the Smoke a few years ago and got lost, confused, and bored. I did read the Tin Princess and thought it was very good, but I think it's a stand alone novel.

Yeah, they were a little hard to plough through. I did read them all though and in the end I got the feeling that it wasn't worth it.
Was Tin Princess the one about the girl and the fireworks?

I think there was a war closing in around her tiny country, and she and a small group were trying to keep it it's own state...there could have been fireworks involved.
