Never Changed
After a previous long-termed writing project, I wrote this from my favorite character's POV. It's a one-shot with a song(Bittersweet Symphony by the Verve) mixed in, because I thought it described the scenes. Again, any good advice or criticism is welcomed.
Has she truly forgotten her true self? Nina wonders that, as she repeatedly checks her hair in the mirror. She knew her place, and she knew in no way would she ever change herself.
'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life
Trying to make ends meet
You're a slave to money then you die
“Nina, this time I want you to end it,” her father, the Soul King order with a hint of malice in voice.
“Yes, father. I will kill him, and I will not fail.”
Following her fathers orders, as usual. She would never change herself.
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
where all the veins meet yeah
Alone, fists clenched tightly, it was time. Now, Nina knew how to kill a person; she had killed many before in her current occupation of Soulstealer. But the new target was different; a boy with no soul, with no emotions. The one named Kihaku.
This street, this town, it all has so much significant meaning to Nina. It was street, her friend. Down this straight path, she has walked and has never trailed away from.
The street never was never changed.
No change, I can't change
I can't change, I can't change
But I'm here in my mind
I am here in my mind
But I'm a million different people
from one day to the next
I can't change my mind
No, no, no, no, no, no, no,no,no,no,no,no
Nina took a deep breath, and took her first step down her street. Suddenly, voices could be heard from the end of the street.
Voices. Children playing, lovers talking, apartment occupants just trying to get on with their lives. How Nina pleaded to be one of them.
The voices of the people never changed.
Well I never pray
But tonight I'm on my knees yeah
I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah
At the end of the street, she could see a flock of dark clouds form over the town.
Oh, the memories. Just last week, Meiz`chef had declared a thunderstorm was coming. But the younger companion wasn’t afraid. He beckoned Nina to dance with him in the storm.
And she did. It felt impossible to her at first, but now…? Meiz`chef was always her companion.
Meiz`chef never changed.
I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now
But the airways are clean and there's nobody singing to me now
Now, Meiz`chef was gone, killed by Kihaku, her enemy. For Nina, the sun never really shined again. She was too much lost in the storm.
The storm in her mind never changed.
No change, I can't change
I can't change, I can't change
But I'm here in my mind
I am here in my mind
And I'm a million different people
from one day to the next
I can't change my mind
No, no, no, no, no, no, no
I can't change
I can't change it
There he was, talking to his companions. He took her companion. Kihaku.
Nina approached him and unsheathed her sword. She raised it to his throat.
“This is the end. I am truly sorry.” She wasn’t sorry in the slightest.
Fighting the enemy; her life never changed.
'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life
Trying to make ends meet
Trying to find some money then you die
It was over in a matter of minutes.
She had fallen, stabbed in the chest area, to the pavement.
She had fallen; Kihaku had won.
She had lost. The battle never changed.
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
where all the veins meet yeah
All Kihaku did was stare. He couldn’t care after all; he had no soul. No emotions.
Kihaku had never changed.
You know I can't change, I can't change
I can't change, I can't change
But I'm here in my mind
I am here in my mind
And I'm a million different people
from one day to the next
I can't change my mind
No, no, no, no, no
That was okay though, she decided. Her vision was starting to get hazed. The pain and the loss of blood only confirmed that.
“Meiz`chef, did I do what you wanted? Will you let me see you now?,” she asked her dead companion. “You said you were always on my side, right?”
Then, her hands went limp at her sides, and her eyes closed softly. But before they did, she saw a small hand grabbing hers, lifting her to a unknown place.
“Did I change for you? Just a little bit?”
That was her last thought. Ever.
Death never changed.
I can't change my mind
no, no, no, no, no,
I can't change
Can't change my body,
no, no, no
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
Been down
Ever been down
Ever been down
Ever been down
Ever been down
That you've ever been down
That you've ever been down
God, my writing sucks.
