Toni Morrison Biography

(1931-present)

'"Tell us what it is to be a woman so that we may know what it is to be a
man. What moves at the margin. What it is to have no home in this place.
To be set adrift from the one you knew. What it is to live at the edge of
towns that cannot bear your company."' (from Nobel Lecture, 1993)

Toni Morrison( originally Chloe Anthony Wofford) was born in 1931 in Lorain, Ohio.  Her family had moved from the south to escape racism that was encountered there.  When she became of age, Morrison went to the highly acclaimed all black Howard University in Washington D.C.  After also going to Cornell Institute in New York,  she finally got her M.A. and began to teach English at few different schools such as Howard University and Texas Southern.  She then became an editor for Random House publishing and edited novels.  While doing this, she began writing her first novel in 1970( "The Bluest Eye").  Since then, she has continued to write, penning over ten works while also raising children.
