One of the most important factors for enabling an effective student learning environment is the establishment of a sense of community within the classroom.

Central to the case of eWeb were:  

  • the role of the facilitator;
  • student ownership;
  • common purpose;
  • orientation and experimentation phases;
  • focus on social aspects;
  • privacy and a lack of anonymity; and,
  • building on the knowledge, values and behaviors inherent in the community - here, adolescent writers.
