Inheritance
Um, I've read both the books currently out in the Inheritance trilogy. (this will date itself sooooo much) The first one I felt was very Tolkien-esque, but I felt the second one, after it got past the obviously Tolkien-borrowed mythology, Paolini came into his own and took the story. It was a good read in all sans the points I've mentioned. Anyone else read this and care to comment?

There was a big big thread on it back a while ago.
I've read them and yeah, in the first book I was quiet turned off my the tolkienesque mythology and stuff with the shade and other ocr like creatures. COPY CAT! He did forge his own way later on though. |

I think all fantasy borrow something from Tolkien. I mean . . . Tolkien is the Master he is everybody's teacher. Personally my first attempt at writing was a fan-fic on LotR. And I am borrowing stuff from Tolkien with my orcs ands such. But if we are copying Tolkien we are copying old mythology that are centuries old. Gollum was based on an evil dwarf king from . . . I think . . . German myths. So fantasy writers owe alot to old myths.

I would definitely agree with that, but Paolini should go back to the roots of the myths, not the stories based off them
