All of the great reads I have read so far have been novels. How about some good short stories?

I just read a good one by Leo Tolstoy called "Alyosha the Pot" (don't worry it is much shorter then War and Peace :) ). Araby is another good one. My favorite one that my class read for our short story unit was "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas." If anybody knows anything about this story they would probably agree with this, all the girls in my class would walk away and all the guy would stay.

Any others?

You knew Tolstoy was my favorite, you tease.

But speaking of Russians and short stories, Nikolai Gogol anyone? Although I have to say Poe is artful in the form of short stories.

I actually am not teasing. I have to write a paper on it for english. I don't know what approach I will take. Either historical, mimetic, reader response.

You have to write a paper on Tolstoy? Luckeh! haha send it my way, I'd love to know more about him.

I think a historical approach would be more interesting

Joseph, you're always teasing.

last year in english, we read 'interpreter of maladies' by jhumpa lahiri; my favorite was the first one, 'a temporary matter.'

however, my all-time favorite short story is 'cathedrals' by raymond carver (genius!). also a fan of denis johnson. some of the stuff that he does for mcsweeney's is great.

Yup! I've recently found a website that has a lot of cool short stories and even a couple of flash fiction stories on it. Check out http://www.fictionfixation.com for some interesting reading.
