View Full Version : What do you want to be when you "Grow up"
What do you want to be when you're older?
I've wanted to be a teacher since I was a youngster. I would have never guessed I'd be a History and English teacher though.
What do you want to be? Do you work anywhere right now?

Something in science, for at least a while. I don't really know yet - maybe engineering? Physics? Something that'll require more than 4 years of college, probably. I think it would be cool to be a writer, see my name in print, but it's no way easy. [My dad was a writer/muscian and my mum a painter, for a while, and you can imagine how rich we were xD If you guessed "broke" you'd be right.]
I hope your kids love you, Matt. There's not much cooler in this world than having a good teacher. =)
For now, I work a few days a week at the town library, sorting and shelving books. It's pretty easy, mindless, and relaxing, and the library has kick-butt air conditioning. It's completely worth the minimum wage.

I want to be a journalist, hopefully writing for the New Yorker. I've wanted to be a writer since I was in the 2nd grade.

Everything.
I want to get a fatty degree after maybe 4+ years in college, hopefully involving cognitive science. I want to try all sorts of jobs from truck driving to flight attendent, definitely want to teach something. There's just too much life for me to do one job.

That's a great attitude! During my last two years of college I worked the as an EMT on midnight shift for an ambulance company. Every other Saturday night I would work from 7:30 PM - 7:30 AM on the ambulance. I have some amazing stories and I've met some amazing people. It was tiring, but it's probably one of the best decisions I've made.
There's so much to do out there :)

Thank you.
Yeah I volunteer at a hospital now and I met lots of fun people my age. One of the things on my list is to be an EMT. What kind of things did you guys do?
Thank you.

I've:
Responded to lots of calls for sick and injured patients
Worked celebrity events providing standby coverage
Worked cardiac arrests / full codes
Crawled through an overturned car to pull my patients out the back window
Taken patients to dialysis or doctors offices
Landed helicopters and transported their patients to local hospitals
Taken patients in full restraints to psych. facilities
Helped comfort worried patients
Sang christmas carols with a patient as we took her home so she could pass away with her family by her side
Met some truly amazing heroes and seen some heroic efforts by people in police, fire, and EMS.
I've even used my skills at 30,000 feet when a man had a heart attack. He lived :)
It's an amazing job and the knowledge I learned is used regularly even outside of work.

Wow. This is definitely something I want to do. With all those things you've mentioned, you probably have to go through training to become an EMT right? [Sorry, I don't know a lot about it haha, just that it sounds like something I would be interested in.]

I went to a local EMT Academy after my first year of college. I went to school M-F 9AM - 5 PM for two months and got my license. Being an EMT is the first step of becoming a Paramedic.
More than just woking in EMS, I've used my skills at college, on an airplane, and even at home. I worked an hour and a half away from where I went to college, but still loved driving to work Saturday evenings, working the midnight shift, then driving back to college in the morning. Many days I really felt like I did something good and provided society a service.
There are few jobs that provide instant feedback, and EMS is definitely one of them.
When I grow up (I feel so young), I want to be a physician. I think I wanted to be a docter since 3rd or 4th grade. I think I would be okay at this profession (I don't mind blood or 10 extra years of school :) ).
I have a friend (15 years old) who is an EMT. He said he only needed 60 hours of training, but he is a junior EMT. I think he works with the radio system for our fire department. Do they have anything like that at your fire departments?

Wow everyone seems to want to do something medical or scientific. I think its really wonderfull that you guys want to help people. Being a doctor or EMT was never really on my career list being a germaphobe, but I have alot of respect for people who can deal with medical emergancies and such. As for me i know i want a career in music, probably a music teacher.

I have that same attitude of venilla. I keep reading about new things and put them on my to-do list. I get soooo excited about doing new stuff.
Anyway, I'm nearly 18 and next year ( next october) i'll start University. The course I've chosen is a bachelor in commerce. I'll become an economist or something like that.
I'd like to write as well (perhaps a freelance journalist) but it is mighty difficult.
However, something I really want to do is study abroad - maybe a post gruaduate degree in the UK or ireland. How cool is that?
I am from Malta - it's a small island in the mediterrenean sea.

The tattoo has nothing to do with tattoos. Its a student written newspaper based in my town, but with members from all over.
I think I found its website. I won't post it because of the advertising rule, but was it established in 1994 (so I know I have the right site). It sounds very interesting. I read a couple articles.

You can post links to other sites, it's just that we dont want:
1. You posting links to commercial sites where you make money
2. You spamming the forum with a link to your personal or commercial site (Spam = Posting it as a reply in tons of threads).
Other than that I'm fine with people posting URLs :)
Thanks for the info Matt.
The website I found was http://home.comcast.net/~majerus-collins/homepage.htm for the tattoo newspaper. I read a couple articles...it is really well written!

That's a really cool thing to want to do - and I'm sure that there are some male social workers. They might not be as many or as visible as the female ones, but no doubt they're there.
You guys are all so noble in your futures...

Social work is a lovely choice! You get to help people and talk to them. I think it's a very interesting and rewarding career to pursue.

Most towns have a junior EMT training program if you go to your town hall, police dept or fire dept they would have info on training. I think the age requirement varies from state to state but I've heard the same thing about a junior training program that is around 60hrs.

I'm doing a degree in Genetics at the mo, but I have NO idea what that leads to. Really and truely, I'd like to be a writer, but I know the chances of that are teeny weeny. :( I'm still going to have a good try though!
Isis - You are so lucky! I used to work in my school library and I miss it so much! I wish I could get a saturday job in my local library, but they aren't hiring.

I either want to become a OBGYN or become a clothing designer or a childeren's doctoror or work at micrsoft. I used to live in Washington state so I've seen the place ( microsoft headquarters[ i probably spelled it wrong]) and know a lot of people who work there and it's soooo cool. plus you get free food. lol. ANd it's really cool because on Halloween they pass out candy to kids from their offices and afterward you can go hunting in the hallways for leftover candy, it's like a scavenger hunt. It's really fun.:toung:

I'm pretty much directionless. Of course, I would like to see my name become common knowledge, but I doubt it - I'd have to be incredibly insane or just a brainatic. Of course, that means that I'll have to work my ass off.

I've found out about what I most certainly DON'T want to be - through helping my parents with their jobs. I don't want to be an editor for a small, independent music magazine that's competing with mags with bigger budgets. And I don't want to be an IT consultant, helping Big Brother and his minions get information on companies, banks, and "technologies". Both involves working a desk job, [though at home...] and both involve responsibility - so there's not the "5pm, time to wrap it up" instinct.
In IT you essentially search the internet, trying to glean sales information, as well as growth rates, predictions, and other such figures dealing with economy of business.
For the magazine I've played intern a few times, though I know how frustrating my dad's serious heavy work can be. I sometimes look up things for listening lists, and every so often I do the upkeep/article exchange on the website, as well as keeping up these forums (http://www.intunemonthly.com/forums). which, by the way, needs members. So, if you're interested in music, drop on by.
Aug. and I'm sick of this "high school student" job as well.
